Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Friday, April 17, 2020.  It's Field-trip Friday!  Fri-yay!  It's also National Haiku Day.  Haiku is short poetry to describe a moment or object, and is usually about nature.

For your field trip, you could take a "Haiku Hike" and capture your moment in nature.
Here is the Haiku structure:
line 1:  5 syllables
line 2: 7 syllables
line 3:  5 syllables

Here are 2 samples:
Flowers are blooming
Spring is in the warm blue sky
Sweet birds are singing

Mountain beautiful
Birds flying high and watching
Sun's warmth on my face

OR...

You could travel to National Museums Scotland and enjoy their virtual tour of an Egyptian tomb.

OR...

You could visit the Dominican Republic and learn about protecting coral.
I care about you.
Be brave and be kind.
Love,
Mrs. Hock🙂

PS: Earth Day is next Wednesday, April 22.  Here is a short packet of coloring pages and a word search you can use if you would like.

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Wednesday, April 8, 2020.  Did you see the full moon last night? The nickname of the April full moon is "the pink moon", and it is also a supermoon.  It is called "the pink moon" because it represents this time of year when new pink spring flowers begin to bloom.  It is a supermoon because it is the full moon that will be closest to earth this year.  Here is my picture I took last night. This picture was taken about 7:30 pm and the moon was its brightest at about 10:30 pm.

Do you like astronomy?  If you would like to learn more about the universe check out this website for games, facts, videos, science fair project ideas and more!

Mrs. Jensvold has another read aloud for us to enjoy.  It is posted on our blog.

You received your chromebook yesterday.  Remember to:

  • be ready to use Google Classroom next week
I care about you.
Be brave and be kind.
Love,
Mrs. Hock 🙂

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Wednesday, April 1, 2020.  It is April Hope Day!  It is a day to be a good friend by brightening someone's day, spreading kindness and giving hope.  Throughout the United States and around the world, students are decorating their windows as a sign of hope.  Students are using rainbows, hearts and teddy bears.  These signs of hope are telling people "everything will be OK", and also thanking health care workers.

What will you put in your window to put a smile on someone's face?
How many signs of hope will you see and count on a walk in your neighborhood today?

We finished our Humphrey read aloud.  The final postings are on our blog.  If you enjoyed this book, there are 5 more in the series.

Be brave and be kind.

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Monday, March 30, 2020.  It is our second week of learning at home.  Thank you for all of your efforts with your families last week as you started this new work.  I really enjoyed all the pictures and samples of work you shared with me!  This week will be similar as you continue to make your routines and schedules at home.  Your packet that arrives on the bus today will have some visual tools to help you with your job as a student at home.

Remember to check our blog for Humphrey read aloud updates.  We're almost finished this book.  Let me know if you have any chapter book requests for our next read aloud.

Our Monday Mystery Doug is from this date one year ago.

Let's be heroes together!  I look forward to talking to each of you this week!

Be brave and be kind.

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Friday, March 27, 2020.  I am always honest with you, and I share with you this morning that I am very sad.  I found out last night that we will not be together at RMCS again this year.  We will have to do our best job learning while we stay at home.   I am still your teacher, and we are still our amazing 2nd grade class from room 14.

I know we are brave and kind, and now we need to show that even more.  We will be brave while we try this new and different learning from home together.  We expected to be together at school again and now we will need to find a new way to do that.  We will be kind while we understand each others' feelings.

I will work very hard for us to keep learning and growing together.
The sun is shining and it is a new day.  I have great hopes for us.
Be brave and be kind.
Love,
Mrs. Hock 🙂

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Thursday, March 26, 2020.  We will have read aloud today.  I created a video of me reading the end of chapter 12 from The World According to Humphrey.  You can watch this video on our blog on the "Read Alouds" tab.  https://mrshocksclass.blogspot.com/  Here's a picture of the 19 students I read to as I recorded the video.

Today you will write about an animal.  Here are 2 links to inspire your writing.
  1. a cute slide show of animal babies and their parents  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtE0FBHFYag
  2. a website of animal activities and games https://switchzoo.com/

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Wednesday, March 25, 2020.  It is a wonderful day to play with words!  What wondrous words will you use today?  My family enjoys word games.  Last night we played Scrabble and Scattergories.  To play Scattergories you complete a list of categories by uniquely naming an object in each category given the beginning letter.  Here is one of my lists from last night.  See if you can complete the same list with the first letter of your first name.
  1. something you wear:  slippers
  2. dessert:  sherbet
  3. things found on a map:  sea
  4. animal: swan
  5. kitchen item:  spatula
  6. girl's name:  Stephanie
  7. boy's name: Seth
  8. things with spots: salamander
  9. pizza topping: sausage
  10. color:  scarlet
  11. outside activity: skateboarding
  12. subject in school: science
You can try other word games here:

Mrs. Hock🙂

Dear Sensational 2nd Graders,
Today is Tuesday, March 24, 2020.  Let's have snackcess outside today to play in the new snow!

Today we will write a story with a beginning, middle and end.  Maybe you will write a story about what you have been doing at home.  Or, sometimes drawing helps to get ideas for a story.  Here are 2 author/illustrators who host a daily video to draw every day.  Share your doodle and tell me a story!
